Don’t Let Go

Author: Sharla Lovelace
Publisher: Montlake Romance
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Source:  Jennifer Otey

Goodreads:  Noah Ryan and Jules Doucette had spent every moment of their lives together, first as childhood best friends and later as young lovers. The two had their future all planned out—until one unspeakable decision tore them apart.

Twenty-six years later, Jules is living her life by someone else’s plan. She’s running her mother’s store, living in her mother’s house, following her mother’s rules, and keeping the secrets her mother made her bury.

Then Noah comes home, and any sense of order and structure flies out the window. Noah’s return does more than just stir up old memories—it also forces Jules to see her life in a whole new way and uncover secrets even she didn’t know were hidden. But can the power of first love triumph over years of pain and lies?

Ope’s Opinion:   Oh, this book is excellent!!  Even if Romance isn’t your genre, but you like family drama, mother / daughter relationships and characters that will pull at your heart – then you need to read this one.

Every time you think you know where the story is going, it takes a turn.  When you think that is all the unexpected events, Sharla throws in another one.  It kept me reading and took my breath away a few times.

For the romance lovers – there are a few scenes you will like – that I could have lived without.  There was also some language that could offend some people.  Even with that said, I thought this book was an awesome read.

slightly-south

Publication Date: April 25, 2017
Publisher:  Gallery Books

Goodreads:  Caroline Murphy swore she’d never set foot back in the small Southern town of Peachtree Bluff; she was a New York girl born and bred and the worst day of her life was when, in the wake of her father’s death, her mother selfishly forced her to move—during her senior year of high school, no less—back to that hick-infested rat trap where she’d spent her childhood summers. But now that her marriage to a New York high society heir has fallen apart in a very public, very embarrassing fashion, a pregnant Caroline decides to escape the gossipmongers with her nine-year-old daughter and head home to her mother, Ansley.

Ansley has always put her three daughters first, especially when she found out that her late husband, despite what he had always promised, left her with next to nothing. Now the proud owner of a charming waterfront design business and finally standing on her own two feet, Ansley welcomes Caroline and her brood back with open arms. But when her second daughter Sloane, whose military husband is overseas, and youngest daughter and successful actress Emerson join the fray, Ansley begins to feel like the piece of herself she had finally found might be slipping from her grasp. Even more discomfiting, when someone from her past reappears in Ansley’s life, the secret she’s harbored from her daughters their entire lives might finally be forced into the open.

Exploring the powerful bonds between sisters and mothers and daughters, this engaging novel is filled with Southern charm, emotional drama, and plenty of heart.

On Second Thought

onAuthor: Kristan Higgins
Publisher: HQN Books
Genre: Contemporary Fiction

Goodreads:  Following in the footsteps of her critically acclaimed novel If You Only Knew , multi-bestselling author Kristan Higgins returns with a pitch-perfect look at the affection—and the acrimony—that binds sisters together

Ainsley O’Leary is so ready to get married—she’s even found the engagement ring her boyfriend has stashed away. What she doesn’t anticipate is for Eric to blindside her with a tactless breakup he chronicles in a blog…which (of course) goes viral. Devastated and humiliated, Ainsley turns to her half sister, Kate, who’s already struggling after the sudden loss of her new husband.

Kate has always been so poised, so self-assured, but Nathan’s death shatters everything she thought she knew—including her husband—and sometimes the people who step up aren’t the ones you expect. With seven years and a murky blended-family dynamic between them, Ainsley and Kate have never been overly close, but their shared sorrow dovetails their faltering worlds into one.

Despite the lifetime of history between them, the sisters must learn to put their differences aside and open their hearts to the inevitable imperfection of family—and the possibility of one day finding love again.

Ope’s Opinion:   I really do like Kristan HIggins stories and style of writing.  This particular one had too much detail for me.  At times, there was so much detail, I lost the story line.

This sisters relationship was amazing! I have a sister and she is one I turn to and care about her opinion.  I also have two adult daughters that I hope have the same kind of relationship.

These two strong, independent women are the kind of examples I really enjoy reading about.  They supported each other through the difficult times.

I will be reading another Kristan Higgins.  She is one of my “go-to” authors.

Sleepless in Manhattan

Author: Sarah Morgan
Publisher: HQN Books
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Goodreads:  USA TODAY bestselling author Sarah Morgan introduces a sizzling new trilogy about three best friends embracing life—and love—in Manhattan

Cool, calm and competent, events planner Paige Walker loves a challenge. After a childhood spent in and out of hospitals, she’s now determined to prove herself—and where better to take the world by storm than in the exhilarating bustle of Manhattan? But when Paige is let go from the job she loves, she must face her biggest challenge of all—going it alone.

Except launching her own events company is nothing compared to hiding her outrageous crush on Jake Romano—her brother’s best friend, New York’s most in-demand date, and the only man to break her heart. When Jake offers Paige’s fledgling company a big chance, their still-sizzling chemistry starts giving her sleepless nights. But can she convince the man who trusts no one to take a chance on forever?

Ope’s Opinion: I know this book is in the romance genre, so I expect some sex scenes, but this one had a little too much concentration on that and not enough on the story line for me.   The story was a great one, so that kept me reading.

This is the first in a series of three – each book is about a different friend. I did like it enough to want to read about the other two friends.

If you are a romance reader this is definitely a book you won’t want to miss.

Snowfall on Haven Point

snowfall

Author: RaeAnne Thayne
Publisher: HQN Books
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Source:  Little Bird Publicity

Goodreads:  There’s no place like Haven Point for the holidays, where the snow conspires to bring two wary hearts together for a Christmas to remember.

It’s been two rough years since Andrea Montgomery lost her husband, and all she wants is for her children to enjoy their first Christmas in Haven Point. But then Andie’s friend asks a favor—to keep an eye on her brother, Sheriff Marshall Bailey, who’s recovering from a hit and run. Andie will do anything for Wyn, even park her own misgivings to check on her grouchy, wounded bear of a brother.

Marshall hates feeling defenseless and resents the protective impulses that Andie brings out in him. But when a blizzard forces them together for the holidays, something in Marshall begins to thaw. Andie’s gentle nature is a salve, and her kids’ excitement for the holidays makes him forget why he never wanted a family. If only he and Andie can admit what they really want—each other—their Christmas wishes might come true after all.

Ope’s Opinion:  Reading RaeAnne Thayne’s book is such a pleasant trip back to where I have been before ( Haven Point ), catching up with old friends and meeting a few new people.  Her books are one of my “go-to” reads – I always know I am going to enjoy it.

Snowfall on Haven Point put me the mood to get ready for the holidays ( I know it is early, but I am an early shopper! ).  If you are looking for a book gift for someone – this one is coming out September 27th – pick it up and put it away for those cold reading days.

Mending Fences

mending

Author: Sherryl Woods
Publisher: Mira
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Source: Christi Sheenan at HarperCollins

Goodreads:  Devastating secrets tear two families apart in this acclaimed novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Sherryl Woods!

For ten years Emily Dobbs and Marcie Carter have been the closest of friends. They’ve raised their kids together, shared joy and heartache, exchanged neighborhood gossip over tea. But when Marcie’s son, now a college freshman sports star, is arrested for date rape, the bond between the families could be shattered forever.

As the Carters try to deal with the unthinkable, Emily discovers her daughter has been hiding a terrible secret…a secret that threatens the futures of both families. Recently divorced, Emily struggles to keep it all together—to support her terrified daughter, to maintain her friendship with Evan’s mother and to have faith in the detective who could change all of their lives.

When things seem darkest, both she and Marcie discover that sometimes the first step toward a better future is mending fences with the past.

Ope’s Opinion:  Where to start talking about this amazing book –  I don’t think Contemporary Romance is the correct genre.  It is a so much deeper subject and characters then what I think of as a traditional romance novel.  There was some romance in it, but not what I think that most romance readers would expect.

This is hard to talk about without revealing spoilers, so I am going to be vague.  I was into this book from page one and did not want to put it down at all.  Even though it was deep, it was written so that it was easy to read.  The subject was handled very well and realistic.

The only thing that I found a little unrealistic is Emily and Marcie’s friendship goes through a hard time and I feel like after being angry with each other, they just forgave each other without really working through their difficulties.

This book has been made into a Hallmark movie.  I am looking forward to watching it and seeing if it looks like I pictured it while reading.
