Goodreads:  Katherine Barclift had it all: the perfect job, the perfect car, and what she thought was the perfect marriage. But when her entire world collapses in one stomach-churning instant, she hits the road and keeps driving until that so-called “perfect life” is just a dot in her rearview mirror.

A chance encounter leads her to make a pit stop in Boot Creek, a drowsy little North Carolina town where she can call herself Katy, soak up the peace and quiet…and drink in the bluer-than-blue eyes of Derek Hansen, a local doctor still wrestling with his own painful past. Both Katy and Derek are wary about giving romance another shot, but they can’t deny the intense attraction between them. And if being in Boot Creek has taught them anything, it’s to take life as it comes and never pass up a chance at true love…no matter how wounded your heart may be.

Ope’s Opinion:  This book started out a little on the sad side, but moved quickly forward from there.  The pace was awesome – constantly moving the story along.  Most of the book only took place in a couple of weeks, but it felt like so much was packed into that time period.

I am definitely going to look for more books by Nancy Naigle.  She didn’t use much of any foul language, the characters prayed at their meal times and they gave God credit. This was not a christian book in any way and was not preachy.  These characters felt very real with real reactions to difficult situations.

The woman in this story were amazingly independent.  I wanted them to be my friends.

Rating:  4 – I like this book so much I know several friends to share it with.

It’s You

Goodreads:  From the USA Today bestselling author of the Brennan Sisters novels comes a heartwarming story about finding love and strength, even in the darkest moments…

In the wake of a tragedy that tore her life down to the foundations, Dr. Alison McAdams has lost her way. So when she’s summoned to Napa to care for her ailing father, she’s not sure she has anything to offer him—or anyone else.

What Ali finds in Northern California wine country is a gift—an opportunity to rest, and distance from her painful memories. Most unexpectedly, she finds people who aren’t afraid of her grief or desperate for her to hurry up and move on.

As Ali becomes part of her father’s community, makes new friends of her own, and hears the stories of a generation who survived the Second World War, she begins to find hope again. In a quest to discover the truth about another woman’s lost love, she sets off on a journey across oceans and deep into history. And in making sense of that long-ago tragedy, Ali is able to put together the broken pieces of her heart and make new choices that are right for her.

Ope’s Opinion:  I really think for me this book is a 3.5 – not because it wasn’t good, but because it has  a lot of history in it.  I am giving it a 4 since most people will love the history.  The story itself is very good.

I felt like Alison’s life and journey paralleled Edie’s.  It was interesting to see somethings don’t change with time – may the details are different, but the out comes are similar.  I think Alison learned a lot from Edie in a short period of time.

If you are interested in Germany or Nazi history you would probably really enjoy reading this book.  It was a different perspective.

Forgotten

Goodreads:  When everyone thinks you’re dead, how do you start your life over again?

Emma Tupper, a young lawyer with a bright future, sets out on a journey after her mother’s death: to Africa, a place her mother always wanted to visit. But her mother’s dying gift has unexpected consequences. Emma falls ill during the trip and is just recovering when a massive earthquake hits, turning her one-month vacation into a six-month ordeal.

When Emma returns home, she’s shocked to find that her friends and colleagues believed she was dead, that her apartment has been rented to a stranger and that her life has gone on without her. Can Emma pick up where she left off? Should she? As Emma struggles to recreate her old life, everyone around her thinks she should change – her job, her relationships, and even herself. But does she really want to sacrifice everything she’s working so hard to gain?

Ope’s Opinion:  This book was given to me,  from my daughter Kristin of Kritters Ramblings. She loved this book so I went into with a very positive expectation.  I think she liked it more then I did, but I did enjoy this read.

If you have read my other posts, you know, I am slow to get into a book.  This one was no exception. I enjoyed it from the beginning, but didn’t really get into it until part of the way through it.  Don’t get me wrong it was good – it just takes me a while to feel involved.

I can’t imagine coming back to a life that isn’t there anymore.  Where do you begin to pick things up? How often do you think – if only I could start over? – Read this book and you may rethink that thought!

Too much foul language.

Rating: 4 – I like the book so much I know several friends to share it with.

P.S. I Love You

Genre: Contemporary Young Adult

Goodreads:  Lara Jean didn’t expect to really fall for Peter.
She and Peter were just pretending. Except suddenly they weren’t. Now Lara Jean is more confused than ever.
When another boy from her past returns to her life, Lara Jean’s feelings for him return too. Can a girl be in love with two boys at once?

In this charming and heartfelt sequel to the New York Times bestseller To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, we see first love through the eyes of the unforgettable Lara Jean. Love is never easy, but maybe that’s part of what makes it so amazing.

Ope’s Opinion:  I have enjoyed several of Jenny Han’s books.  This is right up there at the top of them.  She can really capture a young girls heart and thoughts.  This is a book I would love to share with my granddaughters when they are a bit older.

Jenny Han’s characters are all very well developed, they have flaws and they are realistic. Relationships are handle with truth and honesty.  I think any girl could relate to at least one of the characters.

I will continue to look for books that Jenny Han writes.

Goodreads:  One of People magazine’s  Great Beach Reads: “This novel about a striving, upscale California family is a bracing entertainment that zeroes in on the modern pressures put on teens–and their folks.”

The Admissions brilliantly captures the frazzled pressure cooker of modern life as a seemingly perfect family comes undone by a few desperate measures, long-buried secrets—and college applications!

The Hawthorne family has it all. Great jobs, a beautiful house in one of the most affluent areas of northern California, and three charming kids with perfectly straight teeth. And then comes their eldest daughter’s senior year of high school . . .
Firstborn Angela Hawthorne is a straight-A student and star athlete, with extracurricular activities coming out of her ears and a college application that’s not going to write itself. She’s set her sights on Harvard, her father’s alma mater, and like a dog with a chew toy, Angela won’t let up until she’s basking in crimson-colored glory. Except her class rank as valedictorian is under attack, she’s suddenly losing her edge at cross-country, and she can’t help but daydream about the cute baseball player in English class. Of course Angela knows the time put into her schoolgirl crush would be better spent coming up with a subject for her term paper—which, along with her college essay and community service hours has a rapidly approaching deadline.
Angela’s mother, Nora, is similarly stretched to the limit, juggling parent-teacher meetings, carpool, and a real-estate career where she caters to the mega rich and super-picky buyers and sellers of the Bay Area. The youngest daughter, Maya, still can’t read at the age of eight; the middle-child, Cecily, is no longer the happy-go-lucky kid she once was; and the dad, Gabe, seems oblivious to the mounting pressures at home because a devastating secret of his own might be exposed. A few ill-advised moves put the Hawthorne family on a heedless collision course that’s equal parts achingly real and delightfully screwball.
Sharp and topical, The Admissions shows that if you pull at a loose thread, even the sturdiest of lives start to unravel at the seams of high achievement.

Ope’s Opinion:  This story is like a vine on a trellis.  All the characters are intertwined and effect each other.  The stories twist and turn around each other.  It was great to hear this story from each perspective.

My perspective on this story is unique – I worked in a guidance office and I watched students going through the admissions process.  Each student handled it differently and the families always had their expectations, which influenced the whole process.

Meg Mitchell Moore really made the characters come off the page and feel like someone you might know and care about.  They each had flaws, secrets and agendas of their own, as well as for each other.  It felt very real to me.

The Rumor

Goodreads:  Madeline King and Grace Pancik are best friends and the envy of Nantucket for their perfect marriages, their beautiful kids, their Sunday night double dates with their devoted husbands. But this summer, something’s changed, and if there’s anything Nantucket likes better than cocktails on the beach at sunset, it’s a good rumor.

And rumor has it…

…that Madeline, a novelist, is battling writer’s block, with a deadline looming, bills piling up, and blank pages driving her to desperation–and a desperately bad decision;

…that Grace, hard at work to transform her backyard into a garden paradise, has been collaborating a bit more closely that necessary with her ruggedly handsome landscape architect;

…that Grace’s husband, successful island real estate developer “Fast Eddie” Pancik, has embarked on quite an unusual side project;

…that the storybook romance between Madeline’s son, Brick, and Grace’s daughter Allegra is on the rocks, heading for disaster.

As the gossip escalates, and they face the possible loss of the happy lives they’ve worked so hard to create, Grace and Madeline try mightily to set the record straight–but the truth might be even worse than rumor has it.

Ope’s Opinion: I am a fan of Elin Hilderbrand, so I was really looking forward to her latest book.  I am sad to say this was my least favorite of all her books.

I usually like having a book written from a bunch of different points of view.  This time I never got attached to anyone of the characters.  There was an affair going on and I didn’t even know if I wanted them to get caught.  I just never got that involved.  The story did not keep me wanting to come back for more.

The drama in this book was over the top.  No one was a stable anchor. Each character had their own set of issues going on – all at the same time.

I hope her next book will be one that holds my attention.

Rating: 3 – I like the book enough to suggest it to a friend or two.

Fifteen Minutes

Goodreads:  Overnight, Zack is the nation’s most popular contestant, a country singer with the looks and voice of a young Elvis. As his star rises, Zack is asked to compromise and quiet his beliefs, and also something more. Just as America is falling in love with Zack, just as he’s on the verge of winning it all, his choices lead him to the brink of personal disaster.

At the same time, Reese Weatherly, a therapeutic horse instructor, is no longer sure about her relationship with Zack, or the wedding they had dreamed about. While Zack advances from one round of the competition to the next, an offer comes to Reese–one that will take her to a home halfway around the world.

Then Chandra Olson–reigning diva pop star and one of the Fifteen Minutes judges–intervenes. Chandra has suffered so much public pain and private agony since her days as a Fifteen Minutes contestant. Now she wants just one thing: meaning.

Can Chandra’s private losses help Zack find his way, or will his fifteen minutes of fame cause him to lose the life he once loved? Fifteen Minutesis a story of character, compromise, and the cost of having it all. A story that raises the question: Who are the real winners?

Ope’s Opinion: If you enjoy Karen’s Kingsbury’s writing, you will enjoy this book.

Her portrayal of fame did not feel realistic to me. I did like her characters and wanted them to succeed.   The story was very negative.  The ending was left open for a possible sequel.

If you enjoy Christian fiction, you may like Denise Hunter, Rachel Hauck, Melody Carlson and Susan May Warren.

Winter Stroll

Goodreads: The Quinn family celebrates their most dramatic Christmas yet in this enchanting sequel to Elin Hilderbrand’s bestsellingWinter Street
Christmas on Nantucket finds Winter Street Inn owner Kelley Quinn and his family busily preparing for the holiday season. Though the year has brought tragedy, the Quinns have much to celebrate: Kelley has reunited with his first wife Margaret, Kevin and Isabelle have a new baby; and Ava is finally dating a nice guy.
But when Kelley’s estranged wife Mitzi shows up on the island, along with Kevin’s devious ex-wife Norah and a dangerously irresistible old fling of Ava’s, the Inn is suddenly overrun with romantic feuds, not to mention guests. With jealousy, passion, and eggnog consumption at an all-time high, it’s going to take a whole lot more than a Christmas miracle to get the Quinns–and the Inn–through the holidays intact.

Ope’s Opinion: It took me a little while to get into the book because it has been almost a year since I read Winter Street.  Elin Hilderbrand did an awesome job of reminding me who everyone was.

The story moved all the characters story lines along.  I really enjoyed visiting Nantucket again.  Once the story got going, it moved along quickly.  I am looking forward to her next one – which the ending ( or lack there of ) left it wide open for a sequel.

Come Away with Me

Goodreads:  One minute, Tegan Lawson has everything she could hope for: an adoring husband, Gabe, and a baby on the way. The next, a patch of black ice causes a devastating accident that will change her life in ways she never could have imagined.

Tegan is consumed by grief, not to mention her anger toward Gabe, who was driving on the night of the crash. But just when she thinks she’s hit rock bottom, Gabe reminds her of their Jar of Spontaneity, a collection of their dream destinations and experiences, and so begins an adventure of a lifetime.

From the bustling markets of Thailand to the flavors of Italy to the ocean waves in Hawaii, Tegan and Gabe embark on a journey to escape the tragedy and search for forgiveness. But they soon learn that grief follows you no matter how far away you run, and that acceptance comes when you least expect it.

Heartbreaking, hopeful and utterly transporting, Come Away with Me is an unforgettable debut and a luminous celebration of the strength of the human spirit.

Ope’s Opinion:  This book will definitely surprise you!  It has a major twist to it that brought me to tears.  The characters are so well developed I was totally invested in what would happen next to them.

The traveling to Thailand, Italy and Hawaii was so well described that I could see it.  I felt like I was there.  The traveling symbolized the traveling Tegan was going through in her life.

Although this book toggled between past and present, you were never confused.  The chapters were clearly marked if you went into the past.

At the end, I felt like I wanted to read it again.  The ending made me want to start at the beginning again.

Rating: 5 – This book is so good it will be passed on and on and on….

Goodreads:  When high school junior Sara wins a coveted scholarship to study ballet, she must sacrifice everything for her new life as a professional dancer-in-training. Living in a strange city with a host family, she’s deeply lonely-until she falls into the arms of Remington, a choreographer in his early twenties. At first, she loves being Rem’s muse, but as she discovers a surprising passion for writing, she begins to question whether she’s chosen the right path. Is Rem using her, or is it the other way around? And is dancing still her dream, or does she need something more? This debut novel in verse is as intense and romantic as it is eloquent.

Ope’s Opinion:  The first thing that attracted me to the book was the cover.  My daughter Kristin of Kritters Ramblings was a dancer.  It is fun to read about dancer after living with one.

This book moved very fast and read very fast.  I could not believe I read over 400 pages in two days.  That is very unusual for me.

The main character, Sara, was very well developed, but all the characters around her were just touched on.  It was all from her point of view, so you did not get the advantage of knowing what other people were thinking or feeling.

The ending wrapped some things up, but left it for another book to be able to follow Sara through her senior year of high school.  We’ll see….

Rating: 3 – I like the book enough to suggest it to a friend or two.
