A Wedding in Driftwood Cove

Author: Olivia Miles
Publisher: Montlake
Genre: Romance
Source: Montlake ( Netgalley )

Goodreads: A wedding brings together three sisters―and an undercurrent of secrets threatens to tear them apart in this seaside romance from author Olivia Miles. With youngest sister Hallie getting married, the three Walsh sisters reunite at their family’s beach house for the big event. It’s a celebratory affair, rife with cherished traditions. But families are complicated, and these sisters are no exception. Claire, the eldest, no longer believes in love after years working as a divorce attorney, and she resorts to taking her “work husband” as her date to convince her family otherwise. Middle sister, Amy, fears a confrontation with the man who broke her heart by announcing he was marrying someone else. And although Hallie has always lived a charmed life, she’s getting cold feet about marrying her childhood sweetheart. As the Walsh sisters grapple with the secrets they’ve kept from one another, they must decide if Hallie’s wedding is a chance to mend mistakes of the past…even if it means confronting their feelings about love, life, and one another.

Ope’s Opinion: Oh, a sister story is one of my favorites! This was such a good one. There was definitely romance in this book, but it was not steamy. It was more about family and long term relationships.

I enjoyed that each sister had their own chapters, so you could see the situations from their point of view. They each reacted differently to the family situations. It took them getting back together for the wedding to bring misconceptions up from the past and put them straight.

I enjoyed Olivia Miles writing. A minor complaint for me, was she did repeat a few things ( that is why it is four chairs and not five ).  I will go look and see what else she wrote that I might enjoy reading.

Miracle Creek

Author: Krista Jensen
Publisher: Shadow Mountain
Genre: Christmas
Source: Purchased

Goodreads: When Riley Madigan moves to the sleepy mountain town of Miracle Creek, she hopes her new job as a high school art teacher will help her mend her recently broken heart. A little peace and quiet would be a gift this Christmas season. The last thing on her mind is love.

Former firefighter Mark Rivers has spent the last year recovering from burns sustained during a rescue operation. He’s been trying to piece his life back together but still struggles both emotionally and psychologically. When he meets Riley, he finally sees something that might bring some light back into his life.

When Mark asks Riley to work on a special nativity project, he finds himself falling for her quirky, unaffected ways. Riley doesn’t seem bothered by his scars, but is her affection for him real, or is this just another act of charity? One thing’s for certain, in a small town that views Mark as a fragile hero, it’s hard to pursue a relationship without everyone in his business. And although Riley has sincere feelings for Mark, is she ready to risk her heart?

Broken hearts and lives are mended as the town of Miracle Creek comes together to celebrate a Christmas to remember.

Ope’s Opinion: This was such a great holiday story. It had so much more to it than just the romance. The two main characters each had a lot to deal with before they could enjoy the holidays.

I loved the pace of the relationship between Mark and Riley. It started out as friends and helping each other out, which caused them to spend time together. As they spent that time together they revealed themselves, started to heal and found strength to face fears.

This was a great read, I will look for books from Krista Jensen.

This was such a good read for January.
It started the year off curled up with a book that is hard to put down.
Makes me want to keep reading.

I enjoyed this family drama.
Hannah McKinnon brought this family to life for me.
The setting at a beach cabin was a great place to get to know this family.

Another Kristy Woodson Harvey book is on my favorites for the year list.
This one was in my beach bag, but could be read any time.

Another year of great reading.
These are my favorites.
Hope you had a year of good books.

A Different Kind of Gone

Author: Catherine Ryan Hyde
Publisher: Lake Union Publishing
Genre: Fiction
Source: Lake Union Publishing ( Netgalley )

Goodreads: The truth behind a teenage girl’s disappearance becomes something to conceal in a gripping novel about justice, lies, and impossible choices by New York Times bestselling author Catherine Ryan Hyde.

When nineteen-year-old Jill Moss goes missing near the Utah-Arizona border, everyone has an opinion. Only Norma Gallagher, a search and rescue volunteer, knows the real story.

Norma’s already found Jill, huddled in a cave and terrified that her abusive boyfriend, Jake, will kill her. If he ever sees her again. To protect Jill from a dangerous man, Norma quietly delivers the girl to her grateful parents in California, even though she’s conflicted. Keeping Jill safe and hidden from Jake, the press, and the public will be their secret. But secrets can’t last forever.

Five years later, the disappearance stirs a new media frenzy when Jake is arrested for the murder of Jill Moss—and Norma knows he didn’t kill her. As Jake is about to stand trial, lust for retribution inflames public opinion and Jill’s family refuses to come forward, forcing Norma to make a life-changing decision.

What are the consequences if she stays silent? And what are the risks if she dares to finally tell the truth?

Ope’s Opinion: This was somewhere between a three chair and four chair. It started out very slow and I felt like I was being told a story, not like I was involved in the story. It took me a long time to get into it, the characters felt stiff at first. It definitely got better.

The premiss of the story was a very good one. It showed abuse from a lot of different perspectives. It also had a few twists and turns I did not see coming – which I thought were really good – that is why I had a hard time deciding between a three and four chair.

I have read Catherine Ryan Hyde before and I will read her again, but this one is not my favorite of her writings.

Cover Reveal

This is Kristy Woodson Harvey’s latest book.
The cover is amazing!
I am sure the book will be too!

Goodreads: With “her signature warmth and Southern charm” ( E! Online ), the New York Times bestselling author of The Summer of Songbirds and the Peachtree Bluff series presents a tender and touching novel about a young woman who discovers the family she has always longed for when she spends a life-changing summer in North Carolina.

Present Keaton Smith is desperate for a fresh start. So when her mother needs someone to put her childhood home in Beaufort, North Carolina, on the market—the home that Keaton didn’t know existed until now—she jumps at the chance to head south. Keaton’s grandparents died in a tragic car accident before she was born, so she’s eager to learn more about the family she never met. But even though she has help from her charming next-door-neighbor, his precocious ten-year-old son, and a flock of endearingly feisty town busybodies, Keaton soon finds that she has more questions than answers.

1976: After meeting her adoring husband Townsend, Rebecca “Becks” Saint James abandoned the life she knew and never looked back. Forty years later, she’s made a name for herself as the best hostess North Carolina has ever seen. Her annual summer suppers have become the stuff of legend, and locals and out-of-towners alike clamor for an invitation to her stunning historic home. But she’s struggling behind the façade. Becks strives to make the lives of those around her as easy as possible, but this summer she is facing a dilemma that even she can’t solve. And as the end of the season looms, she is brought to a decision she never wanted to make.

As both Keaton and Becks face new challenges and chapters, they are connected through time by the house on Sunset Lane, which has protected the secrets, hopes, and dreams of the women in their family for generations. For fans of Summer of ‘69 and The Notebook , Last Summer on Sunset Lane explores the power of family, the bonds of friendship, and the boundless nature of love.

I am really looking forward to this book!

Filled with heart and the intoxicating allure of possibility, Starstruck is a must-read for anyone who has ever dreamed of finding love in surprising places.

Ope’s Opinion: Oh, this is the perfect Hallmark movie. It is a good slow burn romance with characters you root to come together. Everything is not perfect. It feels like it could be real.

It is a great book for this time of year when everyone is so busy. It is easy to read and easy to keep track of what is going on. Just an all around good book.

The Ball at Versailles

Author: Danielle Steel
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Genre: Historical Fiction
Source: Delacorte Press ( Netgalley )

Goodreads: Four American debutantes attend a renowned Paris cotillion in #1 New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel’s captivating new novel.

It’s the summer of 1959 and the Palace of Versailles is hosting an event that will make history. It is an exclusive dusk-to-dawn ball in which a select group of American and French debutantes will be presented to international society and royalty. Four young women, all with something to prove, receive what some see as the invitation of a lifetime.

Amelia Alexander, who hopes to eventually attend law school, hesitates to participate in what she sees as an archaic and privileged tradition. But her indomitable widowed mother, Jane, who’s struggled financially and sacrificed for a career, encourages her to attend. Jane would do anything for Amelia to have the chance at a happily ever after.

Felicity Smith is equally uncertain about the ball. Although her family is prominent in the Dallas social scene, Felicity prefers to keep to herself, avoiding the older sister who torments her. But to get out of her sister’s shadow, Felicity decides to accept. If it’s a success, the tables will have turned at last.

For Caroline Taylor, the beautiful ingénue and daughter of Hollywood legends, the ball is an irresistible opportunity. But an unexpected heartbreak just before she leaves for France gets things off to a bad start.

Then there’s Samantha Walker, an art history major with an overprotective father. Her excitement about the invitation is overshadowed by the emotional and physical effects of a past tragedy that still haunts her.

For all these young women, Paris and one transcendent night will change their lives forever. Bestselling author Danielle Steel extends an invitation to all, in The Ball at Versailles .

Ope’s Opinion: This story is amazing. I would like to see it made into a movie. So, you say why only three chairs? Because DS repeats information over and over again throughout the whole book. The same information was given in two consecutive paragraphs – the exact same sentence.

The girls were each very different and it made their stories very interesting. The parents were involved and had interesting lives themselves.

It was wrapped up at the end with a nice bow. The reader was able to see everyones happily ever after.
